New Estonian cinema (Narva)

Narva Estonian Language House (Linda 2, Narva)

‘New Estonian cinema’ is a monthly series of film evenings focused on recent Estonian cinema.

The film evenings aim to introduce contemporary Estonian films and promote listening, reading, and discussion skills. The screenings are preceded and followed by a free-form discussion where participants share their thoughts; more complex (including colloquial) expressions found in the films and the background of the films are also discussed before the screening. Each occasion also provides a specific information or worksheet.

This time, the scintillating documentary Red Cabaret by Manfred Vainokivi will be screened. Cabaret has always had that burning passion that bubbles over on stage, infects and ignites the audience, evokes desire or contemptuous aversion. For all intents and purposes, the cabaret should not have been born during the Soviet era, but not only did it exist – it became insanely popular! The past and present of the cabaret world are linked in the film by an interview with dancer and choreographer Kalju Saareke, but the cabaret performers of years gone by as well as the current day will also have their say.
