Nestled in a medieval merchant’s residence in the Old Town, this institution is not only a museum showcasing the history of Tallinn but also an umbrella organisation for many of the city’s themed museums.
Situated on Vene Street, the museum offers five floors of exhibits on the history of Tallinn from ancient times up to the restoration of Estonia’s independence. The building itself, which was renovated from 1963-1965 in order to serve as a museum, dates back to the 14th century. It attained its current appearance during restoration work carried out from 1997-2000. Alongside its exhibition space and repositories, Tallinn City Museum is also home to the umbrella organisation uniting the museum’s branches.
An Estonian-speaking guide will be showing us around the permanent exhibition at the museum on 13 August. We will have the chance to hone our language skills by asking the guide questions and reading the information boards displayed throughout the building.
