Museum day: Museum of the Fortified Church of Jõhvi (Jõhvi)

Jõhvi Kindluskiriku Muuseum, Rakvere tn 6, Jõhvi

On 6 November we’ll explore the Museum of the Fortified Church of Jõhvi. Situated beneath the vaulted ceilings of the church’s basement, directly under its altar, the museum is linked to the church above by a series of narrow walled passageways. Among the exhibits is a model of the church as it appeared during the time of the Livonian War, when it first took on its fortified appearance. The tragic events of that 16th-century war, and a legend of two brothers that explains how the church came to be, are recounted in a glass painting covering the entire western wall of the basement.
